How we worked out the costs

The Indinewz team worked out each budget for two people, one night, using prices checked in September 2026.

  • Car fuel: return trip at 15 km per litre, with petrol at ₹102.12 a litre in Delhi.
  • Stay: ₹3,000 for one night in a clean mid-range room for two. Weekend and holiday rates can be higher.
  • Tickets: official entry fees and the usual price of the main activity.
  • Not included: food, shopping, and road tolls (except on the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, where we added them).

October to March is the best time for most of these trips. Rajasthan and Agra are too hot from April to June.

1. Agra: Best for a Quick Heritage Trip

  • Distance: 219–235 km, 3.5–4 hours by car
  • By train: Gatimaan Express leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 8:10 am and reaches Agra Cantt at 9:50 am. It returns at 5:45 pm and reaches Delhi at 7:30 pm. Chair car costs ₹1,155 per person. It does not run on Fridays.
  • Main ticket: Taj Mahal entry is ₹50 for Indians, plus ₹200 to go inside the main tomb. Children under 15 go free. Tickets are sold online only.

2-day plan

  • Day 1: Visit the Taj Mahal early in the morning. See Agra Fort after lunch.
  • Day 2: Take a short trip to Fatehpur Sikri, then drive back to Delhi.

Good to know: The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday.

2. Jaipur: Best for Forts and Shopping

  • Distance: 261 km, about 6 hours by car
  • By train: Vande Bharat Express from Delhi Cantt takes about 3 hours 40 minutes. Chair car costs ₹1,060 per person. The AC Double Decker is cheaper at about ₹490–515 per person.
  • Main ticket: The Jaipur composite ticket costs ₹550 for Indian adults. It covers Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh Fort and Albert Hall Museum. City Palace has a separate ticket.

2-day plan

  • Day 1: Amber Fort in the morning, then Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar. Shop at the old city bazaars in the evening.
  • Day 2: Watch the sunrise at Nahargarh Fort, visit Albert Hall Museum, and head back.

Budget for two: about ₹7,600 (fuel ₹3,500 + stay ₹3,000 + composite tickets ₹1,100)

3. Rishikesh: Best for Adventure

  • Distance: 230–260 km. The new Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, open since 14 April 2026, has cut the drive to about 3.5 hours.
  • Expressway toll: about ₹670–675 each way for a car.
  • Main activity: River rafting costs about ₹1,000–1,500 per person for the popular 16 km Shivpuri stretch. Shorter 9 km trips cost about ₹600–1,000.

2-day plan

  • Day 1: Reach by noon. Go rafting in the afternoon. Watch the evening Ganga aarti by the river.
  • Day 2: Walk around Laxman Jhula and the cafés, then drive back.

Good to know: Rafting usually stops during the monsoon and starts again around late September.

4. Mussoorie: Best Hill Station for a Short Trip

  • Distance: 285–295 km. With the new expressway, the drive takes about 4 hours.
  • By train: Dehradun Shatabdi leaves New Delhi at 6:45 am and reaches Dehradun at 12:55 pm. Chair car costs ₹920 per person. From Dehradun, take a taxi up the hill.
  • Main sights: Mall Road, Kempty Falls, Gun Hill and Landour. Most of these are free.

2-day plan

  • Day 1: Reach by lunch. Walk along Mall Road in the evening.
  • Day 2: Visit Kempty Falls in the morning, or take a quiet walk around Landour. Drive back after lunch.

5. Lansdowne: Best for a Quiet Weekend

  • Distance: 255–270 km, 6–7 hours by car via Meerut, Bijnor and Kotdwar
  • By train: Kotdwar is the nearest railway station.
  • Main sights: Bhulla Tal lake, Tip N Top viewpoint, St Mary’s Church and the War Memorial. Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple is about 30 km away.

2-day plan

  • Day 1: Reach by afternoon. Go boating at Bhulla Tal and watch the sunset from Tip N Top.
  • Day 2: Visit Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple in the morning, then drive back.

Good to know: Lansdowne is an army town. It is clean, calm and has very little nightlife.

6. Jim Corbett: Best for a Jungle Safari

  • Distance: 254 km, 5–6 hours by car. Most hotels are in and around Ramnagar.
  • Main activity: A jeep safari costs about ₹6,000–10,000 per jeep. One jeep takes up to 6 people, so it is cheaper in a group.
  • Safari zones: Jhirna and Dhela are open all year. Bijrani, Dhikala and Durga Devi are open from mid-October to June.

2-day plan

  • Day 1: Reach Ramnagar by afternoon. Rest by the river in the evening.
  • Day 2: Go on an early morning safari, when you have the best chance of seeing animals. Drive back after lunch.

Good to know: Book your safari 15–20 days ahead. Slots fill fast, especially for Dhikala.

Budget for two: about ₹12,500–16,500 (fuel ₹3,500 + stay ₹3,000 + one jeep safari ₹6,000–10,000)

7. Nainital: Best for Lake Views

  • Distance: 300–325 km, 6–7 hours by car
  • By train: Kathgodam Shatabdi leaves New Delhi at 6:20 am and reaches Kathgodam at 11:55 am. Nainital is 35 km away, about an hour by taxi.
  • Main activities: A full round on a Naini Lake rowing boat costs ₹210. The ropeway to Snow View Point costs about ₹300–380 per person, return.

2-day plan

  • Day 1: Go boating on Naini Lake and walk along Mall Road.
  • Day 2: Take the ropeway to Snow View Point in the morning, then drive back.

Budget for two: about ₹8,200 (fuel ₹4,200 + stay ₹3,000 + boating and ropeway about ₹1,000)

8. Kasauli: Best for Cool Weather and Walks

  • Distance: 286 km, 6–8 hours by car via Murthal, Ambala and Zirakpur
  • By train: Kalka Shatabdi leaves New Delhi at 7:40 am and reaches Kalka at 11:40 am. Chair car costs about ₹900 per person. Kasauli is about 40 km from Kalka.
  • Main sights: Monkey Point (the highest point in town), Christ Church, Sunset Point and the Gilbert Trail, a 1.5 km forest walk

2-day plan

  • Day 1: Reach by afternoon. Walk the Gilbert Trail and watch the sunset from Sunset Point.
  • Day 2: Visit Christ Church and Monkey Point, then drive back.

Tips for a Weekend Trip from Delhi

  • Leave early. Starting by 6 am helps you miss city traffic and reach by lunch.
  • Book stays early for long weekends and holidays. Prices go up fast.
  • Take the train if you can. Shatabdi and Vande Bharat trains to Dehradun, Kathgodam, Kalka, Jaipur and Agra save you a long drive.
  • Check the weather before hill trips in the monsoon (July to September).
  • Use FASTag to avoid long queues at toll plazas.
