How to make momos at home – check out this step by step guide

Momo is a popular street dumplings and one of the favorites of kids specially. The origin Momo is traced back to Tibet where it is considered to be a popular street food. In India, mainly in Northern section of the country, it is a popular street food. Momos are now available in various forms such as chicken momo, mutton momo, vegetable momo and so on. Since it is one of the favorite dishes of kids, it is a great idea to make it at home. The recipe is quite simple. All you need is to follow a step by step guide and you can make this lip-smacking dish at home.

If you wish to make vegetable momos, you can pack it up with healthy veggies like cabbage, carrots sauteed with garlic, onion, soya sauce, black pepper, vinegar and so on. It is a perfect vegetarian snack to eat in the evening. 

On the other hand, if you want to make non-veg momos, you can fill up the dumplings with smashed chicken pieces, finely chopped onion, garlic, green chilly or black pepper, soya sauce sauteed on medium heat. 

It has to be noted here that you don’t need any special kind of ingredients for making these dumplings. The one and only must-have item you need to make homemade momos is a steamer and you are all done.

As it has already been cleared that momo is a popular kind of Tibetan food and the Tibetian cuisine is not vegan friendly. When the recipe momo was invented, it got popular as a non-veg momo. However, outside of Tibet, it is easy to find various kinds of vegetarian offerings and now, veg momos all-over India.

Well, this momo recipe may seem a bit complicated, but in reality, it is not that difficult. Momos are quite simple to make. There are many people who often wonder how to prepare momos recipes at home. To make this momo making recipe easier for you, check out this step by step guide –

For making momos at home, you need to mix up four ingredients together and then let it rest for some time when you prepare its filling. Roll out the dough properly and cut them into circles and then add fillings into it. Once you are done with this process, fold them and give them desired dumpling shape as you wish. Next step, steam them and enjoy hot steamed momos with chutney.  

The entire momo recipe takes 45 minutes. The main time is required in chopping the vegetables. Once it is done, you need only 15 minutes to sauté them and another 15 minutes for steaming them.

  • Preparing dumpling dough for making veg momos at home

Well, making dumpling dough is an easy recipe. You just need to use salt, flour, water and a little bit of oil. The use of oil is mandatory here as it helps to make the dough more soft and supple and keep it away from drying out. Add a pinch of salt and mix the flour properly. Then add oil and water gradually to make a shaggy dough. Knead it well until it turns into a smooth ball. If you want, you can more flour as required. At the end, you just need to make sure that the dough is barely tacky. 

For preparing this dough, it takes only 5 to 10 minutes and you are done. Once you prepare the dough, cover it up with a clean damp kitchen towel. It will help to keep the dough hydrated and fresh. Let it rest for around 30 minutes. 

Resting the dough for some time is important as the flour gets some time to absorb the extra water and therefore, it makes it easy to handle. If you skip this process, it will be difficult for you to handle the entire thing properly. 

  • While the dough is resting, let’s prepare the momos filling

For preparing veg momos, you need to prepare the fillings with vegetables. First, shred cabbage, carrot, and chop garlic into fine pieces. Once you are done with vegetable cutting, now put cabbage and carrot into a large mixing bowl and toss them nicely. Add two teaspoons of salt and combine everything well. Let them sit for another 5 to 10 minutes and squeeze out the water. 

Now add remaining ingredients to the filling such as garlic, ginger and cilantro. These are the only pieces required to make veg momos at home. If you want you can black pepper. Add some oil to the filling. The oil adds richness and keeps it juicy.

  • Shaping the momos

There are many ways of shaping momo dumplings. You can give shapes of your choice. First, you need to roll the dough thinly, then pull off small pieces and make 4 inches circles. Place them on a baking tray. If you want you can apply a thin layer of oil with a brush so that it does not get stick to the baking tray. Repeat this process until you are completely done with the dumplings. 

  • Cooking the momo

Momos can be cooked in two ways – either steamed or fried. But most of the people prefer steam momo because it makes it a healthier snack for evening. 

For steaming momos, you need to prepare the steamer. Grease it with a thin layer of oil and place the dumplings in the steamer so that they don’t get stick to each other. After steaming, they don’t change in size but you need to make sure that there is plenty of room for steaming to flow around and they don’t get stick together.

Steam the dumplings for nearly about five minutes and you are all done with cooking. While checking the dumplings, always be careful enough to not burn your hand. Once the steaming process is over, pull out the momos and serve them. Repeat this process until you make all of them.
